Oral hygiene

Taking care of oral hygiene is of great importance when avoiding infectious diseases and health problems. Evidence-based oral hygiene techniques reduce patients’ respiratory infections and nutritional problems. On SAFHY platform we have videos of brushing the dentures, helping and guiding the patient to take care of daily dental care and brushing teeth with electric toothbrush. Related to the videos, information about the acid attack and other related issues are provided.

The quality of nursing care can easily be seen from patients’ mouths…..a slogan that one of our nursing educators uses, while teaching dental care to VET.  The slogan is of course not the whole truth about the quality, but it is an interesting point of view to consider.

What is the content of SAFHY learning material like?

We have already made learning material of several subjects:

  • Work clothing and shoes
  • Use of gloves
  • Cleaning touching surfaces
  • Clothe folding
  • Dosing detergent
  • Hand hygiene: hand wash and hand disinfection
  • Cleaning of hospital bed
  • Oral hygiene
  • Waste management in health care
  • Wash and disinfection of care supplies, instruments and equipments
  • Wiping methods
  • Cleaning toilets
  • Preparation of cleaning textiles
  • Removing secretion stains
  • Use of wash and disinfection machine

just to mention some…. These topics are organized later according a logical hierarchy, which we have decided together within the partnership. Some of them are main topics and some subtopics. We also pay attention to content related to basic knowledge of hygiene, since the students need to be able to argue and explain why they are doing in certain way.

One topic always includes text, video(s), photos, learning test and audio for the video. Working methods are introduced and steps of working are described. Some of topics are common for cleaning sector and health care sector, for example ”Removing secretion stains” or ”Cleaning hospital bed”. The material is first planned, and a mind map is developed. Content development is based on latest knowledge and research, common practices and national and international recommendations. A manuscript is also written for the video before the workshop. These are introduced at Workshops and discussed carefully in cross-border cooperation. We compare our practices and share our knowledge and practices. Sometimes we have practoces and arguments that differ from each other far too much, and we need to make compromises.

After the workshops we write the text based on the structure decided at workshop. Later we peer-evaluate the texts. Very often we need to modificate texts after peer-evaluation. After these procedures, we are ready for filming. Making videos needs to be prepared forehand also. We take care of the supplies needed in videos and photos, we practice before video filming and after that we cooperate with our digital production team and finally make the video. Digital production team continues after that with the photos and videos.

Multilingual digital platform

SAFHY digital platform has a multilingual feature. Teaching material is available in Estonian, Finnish, English and Russian. Why do we need many languages? The mobility of work force between Finland and Estonia is increasing. In both of these countries we have a permanent Russian speaking population. In addition Europe is more and more like a common working area for its people. And also the flow of refugees will have effects to education and working life in Central Baltic area.

A student can change the language with one click and learn the professional language in four languages. Language skills are by far the most important factor to succesful employment, when thinking of immigrants. They also enable social inclusion in the community.

Students needs and digital learning

Students needs and the educational field are changing fast. Digital learning is expected to increase and spread widely to vocational education and training, and to working life. It enables lifelong learning, and learning is . Digital material is easy to update and costs of digital learning material are lower compared to conventional materials. Wider use of digital learning platforms is easily arranged with moderate costs. It is easy to use during training periods and work places. Digital material can be reached by mobile or computer everywhere.

Digital learning is learning facilitated with technology. It gives students control over time and place and learning paths. Students need no longer to study in classrooms. In addition the importance of the digital content is high. On SAFHY platform we have text, videos, photos, audios, learning tests and games. There are multiple paths of learning for different kinds of students.
